AbstractThe aim of this work was to estimate forest biomass and carbon stock using two different sensor data: ASTER and TM. Some vegetation indexes were used, such as SR, NDVI, SAVI, TVI and EVI, relating these spectral indexes with forest biomass values observed in field work through linear regression analysis. The study area is located on Ombrophilous Forest, central region of Paraná state, with 32.48 hectares, where the local forest growth is annually monitored. Some statistics analyses were used to evaluate the best regression model such as coefficient of determination, standard error and the relative variation of biomass. The results indicate that NDVI provided by TM sensor as a vegetation index is the more suitable to predict forest biomass by linear regression. The coefficient of determination from regression (R²) was almost 0.5 whereas the relative biomass variation, per hectare, was only 1.25%. Different nonlinear regressions were tested to study the relation between biomass and remote sensing data; however, these regressions were less suitable than the others and moreover difficult to explain your relationship with the biomass change. The carbon stock was estimated multiplying the conversion factor 0.45 for each ton of forest biomass. The total carbon stock to this present study in 32.48 ha was 3.571,2 ton or 108,3 ton.ha-¹.
